History of philosophy in Nepal has begun with Tri-chandra College (Estd 1918 A.D.). At that time TC was tied with Patana University  of Bihar, India. The TC was the first modern collage in Nepal established by Rana prime-minister Chandra Shamsher in order to educate Rana children with modern education. There is a story about TC, when Chandra shamsher was placing foundation-stone for TC, he was very upset because he thought that he is axing his feet to founding such educational institute what possibly will be mean of removal Rana Régime. His thought become true in 1949 when Rana regime has gone.

                          Trichandra M. Campus where first philosophy classes begun

It is said that  philosophy have been  teaching  since establishment of T.C., there is no authentic data is available how many student already been graduated from T.C. before Trivhuban university (which is the first university in Nepal)  was founded at 1961. According to T.U. manuscript, there were seven campuses in Nepal those had authorization to taught philosophy from intermediate to graduate levels. In 1961, the TU recognized philosophy as independent subject for study and had been created central philosophy department. Mr. Gurudattaman was the first professor of philosophy and then Madhav styal, Prof. Birendra Pd Misra and presently, Prof. Parmeswor Lal Yadav of Mahendra bindwswor Campus, Rajbiraj, is serving as a head of central department of philosophy or subject committee chairman of philosophy.

Mahedra Campus of  Biratnagar,  Mahendra Bindeswori campus of  Rajbiraj, Jankpur campus of Janakpur and TC campus of Katmandu hase been running graduates degrees in philosophy. Patan Campus of lalitpur, RatnaraJya campus of  exhibition road, Katmandu are no more running philosophy classes due to law admissions in philosophy and had closed the department permanently. Biratnagar and Jankpur also told to be very law admission. Philosophy central department is located in Rajbiraj but according to a part-time lecture of philosophy in Rajbiraj, they are also facing law admissions in philosophy  even, Rajbiraj has been  running intermediates courses in philosophy.  In TC, about 15-20 student getting admission every year but just 10-14 students welling to appear in final examination. For second year and third years study, the student become more less.

@Problems

TU data says that student enrollment in philosophy, gradually becoming less every year. Its bad news for philosophy. I think there are many reasons to be law admissions in this subject. I tried to  categorize that problem what are preventing students to letting study in philosophy. (1) No advance study in Nepal: There are five universities in Nepal. Among them, only TU is running philosophy courses up to graduate level. Student have no chances to future studies in philosophy within Nepal. If they want to continue their studies, they would have need to go India or overseas, its financially not easy for all. (2)  No job defined: No government body has been recognized philosophy graduates for job sector. Even, Nepalese civil service commission is not recognize it. If you are graduate in philosophy, you cant fight for civil service!!! Why even students are coming to join the philosophy courses?, is really strange! (3) Philosophy is dominated by other disciplines: Parents and guardians always insisting their children to go business studies or sciences what probably can make him/her economically self-sustain. Philosophy cant guarantee for any job. And, in Nepal; philosophy graduates always found struggling for jobs  and have very limited chances to getting it. (4) Study for Job: Nepal is very poor country and has fewer opportunities to  higher study. General people have no money to invest or start new business so, job becpmes more essential  to survive. Most Nepalese people goes to education because they need job. If you are educated and have no job, means you are failure. (5) No upgraded courses: What courses we teach in TU were deigned years ago and outdated. Just teaching and learning history of philosophy is not enough. We need to include timely courses like: Medical Ethics, Philosophy of Environment, Cognitive science, liberal art and etc in our course structure. (6) Activities: Of courses, philosophy is the father of every discipline and has great past but time is changed. If we do not organize promotional programs on philosophy, no body will know there is philosophy  couse in your university. International conferences, seminar and short-time courses on philosophy will be very helpful to promot philosophy in Nepal.
